Six months. One fake relationship. Two people falling apart
Katherine Vale has spent her entire life becoming someone the world could love. Under the name Kat Velvet, she’s one of the biggest pop stars in the country—beautiful, adored, wildly successful, and seemingly untouchable. She has the fans, the money, the sold-out stadiums, and the perfect smile. But somewhere along the way, Katherine stopped loving the life she once dreamed about. Now she’s exhausted, reckless, and barely holding herself together behind the glittering image of America’s favorite pop princess. Then there’s Oliver Green. Six-foot-six, tattooed, arrogant, and impossible to control, Oliver is the lead singer of the dark alternative-rock band BLACK HALO. He hates everything Katherine represents: polished pop music, celebrity royalty, manufactured perfection. And Katherine thinks annoying him is absolutely hilarious. When their management teams force them into a fake relationship to repair both of their public images, the two couldn’t be more incompatible. She is sunshine, glitter, and chaos. He’s darkness, sarcasm, and trouble. But the longer they pretend to be together, the harder it becomes to tell what’s fake. Because Oliver starts seeing the cracks beneath Katherine’s perfect smile. And Katherine starts realizing that the one person who seems to hate Kat Velvet might be the only person who actually wants to know Katherine. The cameras think they’re watching the perfect celebrity romance. They don’t know they’re watching two people slowly fall in love while trying desperately not to fall apart.
Katherine Vale — “Kat Velvet” Age: 22 Height: 5’0” Occupation: Pop superstar / former Victoria’s Secret model Appearance: Insanely gorgeous in a delicate, almost unreal way. Her stage style is glamorous, feminine, sparkly, and slightly provocative. Personality: Loud, funny, cocky, playful, reckless, and completely unafraid of attention. She loves pushing Oliver’s buttons just to watch him lose his patience. Hidden side: Underneath the perfect pop-star image, she’s exhausted and emotionally numb. Fame that once made her happy has slowly consumed her, and her substance use has become part of the life she’s struggling to escape.Tattoos: Her tattoos look tiny and feminine, almost decorative, but every one means something.*🦋 Tiny butterfly on her hand — represents who she used to be. * 🌸 Dainty flower down her spine with delicate curved writing reading “born to die.” * A tiny date behind her ear — the exact date she became famous. She calls it her “death date,” because that’s when she believes Katherine disappeared and Kat Velvet was born.
Oliver Green Age: 24 Height: 6’6” Occupation: Lead singer of BLACK HALO Appearance: Tall, intimidating, and ridiculously attractive. She loves him being an arrogant asshole. Because getting a reaction out of Oliver becomes her favorite form of entertainment.
Ashton — Guitarist of BLACK HALO Chaotic, hilarious, and incapable of taking anything seriously. Ashton is the band’s resident menace, always cracking jokes, stirring up trouble, and making inappropriate comments at the worst possible moment. He’s fiercely loyal to Oliver and somehow becomes Katherine’s favorite person in the band.
Roman — Drummer of BLACK HALO Quiet, cold, and intimidating. Roman rarely speaks unless he has something worth saying, usually watching the chaos around him with an unreadable expression. He keeps everyone at a distance, but underneath his icy exterior, he’s fiercely loyal to the band.
By twenty-two, Katherine Vale had become very good at being watched. There were cameras outside her house, cameras outside restaurants, cameras waiting at airports. There were photographs of her leaving hotels she had never slept in and headlines about people she had never met. Her face appeared on billboards, magazine covers, perfume bottles, and enormous screens above cities she sometimes couldn’t remember visiting. She had once loved all of it.When she was younger, fame had seemed like freedom. She loved performing. She loved hearing thousands of people sing her songs back to her. She loved the clothes and the attention and the strange, electric feeling of knowing that a room could change simply because she had walked into it.She hadn’t understood that fame could become a life of its own.At some point, Katherine stopped being a person who happened to be famous and became a person who was never allowed to stop being famous. The parties became longer. The sleep became shorter. The things she took to keep herself awake, calm, happy, or simply somewhere else became harder to distinguish from one another.Still, she smiled. She smiled because people liked her smile. She laughed because people liked Katherine when she was funny. She performed because people liked Kat Velvet. And eventually, she became so accustomed to pretending that she wasn’t unhappy that she could no longer remember what being happy had felt like. The conference room overlooking Los Angeles was filled with people who knew exactly how much Katherine was worth. Her manager sat beside a publicist. Two lawyers occupied the other side of the table. A representative from her record label had flown in that morning.Katherine sat at the center of it all, dressed casually for once, her platinum hair falling over one shoulder. She looked exactly as she always did in photographs: beautiful, composed, impossible to read.Across from her sat Oliver Green. He was the only person in the room who looked as though he would rather be anywhere else.Lead singer of Black Halo. Six-foot-six, tattooed, dressed almost entirely in black, with the kind of reputation that made publicists reach for aspirin.Katherine knew his music. She knew his reputation, too.Oliver had spent the last several years making a career out of refusing to behave. He also had a well-documented dislike of pop stars.Particularly ones like her.The folder placed between them contained two contracts, a publicity schedule, and several pages of carefully written explanations about brand alignment and audience crossover.Katherine didn’t need to read any of it.She already understood. They wanted her and Oliver Green to date. Not privately. Not eventually.Publicly.Every photograph, appearance, interview, and carefully arranged moment would become part of the same story.A romance constructed for an audience that would never know it was fictional.Katherine looked across the table at the man who appeared to dislike her on principle. For the first time that morning, she felt something close to amusement. Her life had already stopped feeling like her own. Apparently, now she was going to have to share it with him.
