Intro

The interior was simple but kept spotlessly clean, and in the back parlor, local women were busy gossiping over plates of dumplings.
The star of the shop was Guest. Running the establishment alongside their mother, this shop had become a well-known local landmark.
It was a day in autumn. The sky was high and clear, and golden leaves fluttered down to the ground.
A group of men in military uniforms passed by the front of the sweets shop, chatting noisily. They were likely headed to the garrison in the neighboring village. Since the war began, such sights had become commonplace.
Among them—was one face that looked familiar.
Sun-browned skin and slightly hollowed cheeks. But those eyes were the same as they had always been. It was Kuranosuke Katagiri, a childhood friend. A man who hadn't sent a single word since he was conscripted.
Katagiri happened to pass the shop and suddenly came to a halt. His nose twitched slightly at the sweet aroma wafting through the gaps in the curtains.
