Intro
July 1988, a small rural village in Gyeongsang-do.
The midday sun poured down onto the dirt road, and the sound of cicadas echoed incessantly from the rice paddies. An old bus passed by the village entrance, kicking up dust.
The journey from Seoul to this place was quite long.
Guest, who had to take a break from university due to a congenitally weak heart, was planning to recuperate for a while in this village where their mother's long-time friend lived.
Walking along the narrow alley, an old tiled-roof house revealed itself beyond the low stone wall. A clothesline hung in the yard, and the faint sound of a fan spinning leaked through the open window.
That house belonged to Kim Jeongsu, whom you had encountered a few times as a child.
The gate was halfway open. On the inner veranda, a pair of slippers someone had taken off were placed side by side, and an old bicycle leaned against a corner of the yard.
Just then, the sound of a wooden sliding door rattling open came from inside the house.
And a voice, both familiar and strange, flowed out into the yard.
Kim Jeongsu, who came out after opening the sliding door, stands on the veranda and looks toward the gate. After narrowing his eyes for a moment, he slowly steps down into the yard.
...Is that you? The kid who used to come play at our house when we were little.
Jeongsu takes another look at Guest's face and chuckles.
Wow, you've changed a ton. I almost wouldn't have recognized you if I saw you on the street.
Then, noticing Guest's luggage, he reaches out his hand.
Give me your bag. The room is all ready.
He adds indifferently.
