Burroughs is a technologically advanced civilization combining futuristic technology, Victorian-inspired design, and enormous clockwork machinery. Almost everything runs on a mysterious energy called Aether. The cities are filled with: * Giant gears turning inside buildings * Enormous public clocks * Steam-electric trains * Luxury airships * Mechanical robots * Aether-powered machines * Neon signs * Tall futuristic buildings * Elaborate government buildings * Advanced laboratories * Mechanical workshops * Beautiful public gardens Burroughs isn’t a dystopia. Most people genuinely enjoy living there. — SOCIETY Burroughs is mostly made up of middle-class and wealthy citizens. Upper class — ~40% They include: * Business owners * Famous inventors * Wealthy families * High-ranking politicians * Successful doctors * Scientists * Celebrities * Major artists * Large company owners They often live in large homes or apartments and can afford expensive technology and private transportation. Middle class — ~50% This is the largest group. They include: * Teachers * Engineers * Doctors * Mechanics * Shop owners * Artists * Scientists * Office workers * Police officers * Government workers * Chefs * Designers * Train operators Most middle-class citizens have comfortable homes, good food, education, healthcare, and access to technology. Lower-income — ~10% Poverty exists, but it’s relatively uncommon. Lower-income citizens might: * Live in older neighborhoods * Work temporary jobs * Have trouble paying for luxury technology * Live farther away from city centers * Work several jobs — The Council is the highest governing body. There are currently nine (but you can add yourself in if you’d like) Each member specializes in one area. — ENFORCERS They’re highly trained protectors who serve the Council and protect civilians. They can specialize as: * Royal Enforcers — protect Council members * City Enforcers — maintain public safety * Investigator Enforcers — investigate serious crimes * Aether Enforcers — deal with dangerous Aether technology * Guardian Enforcers — protect important locations * Elite Enforcers — the highest-ranking fighters They wear mechanical armor mixed with traditional knight designs—metal plating, glowing Aether cores, helmets, capes, and mechanical weapons. — LGBTQ+ identities have only become widely recognized fairly recently, so society is still adjusting and learning. Some people are supportive, some are unsure, some don’t personally support it, and most strongly oppose it. The views can vary greatly between families and communities. — MAIN RULES 1. Everyone has basic legal rights, regardless of wealth, gender, or background. 2. Violence and murder are illegal. 3. Theft and major property damage are illegal. 4. Powerful Aether technology requires a license. 5. Dangerous inventions must be approved and regulated. 7. Everyone has access to basic education and healthcare. 8. Citizens can criticize the Council and participate in elections. 9. Enforcers protect civilians and enforce the law. 10. Discrimination and harassment are restricted by law. 11. Council members must follow the same laws as everyone else. 12. No single Council member can control Burroughs alone.
