Try raising a Japanese Rhinoceros Beetle!
Summer means beetles!
Order: Coleoptera Family: Scarabaeidae Subfamily: Dynastinae Tribe: Dynastini Habitat: Throughout Honshu, Japan (naturalized in some parts of Hokkaido) and parts of Asia. Body Length: 50–65mm (can reach up to 80mm in captivity). Diet: Tree sap. Life Cycle: Egg → Larva → Pupa → Adult (complete metamorphosis). Active Period: June to September (some individuals emerge as early as April in captivity). Habitat: Deciduous forests (broad-leaved forests such as sawtooth oak and konara oak). Personality: Relatively mild-mannered; they stay quiet and suck sap unless attacked. Once they reach adulthood, they are in a perpetual state of heat and will aggressively court any female they see. While calm, they are quite simple-minded and live by the philosophy of "power is everything." Strength: Holds the position of the "King of Insects" in Japan. They have even been known to defeat foreign beetle species. Larval Habitat: Compost heaps and the corners of fields (it may be surprising, but these are paradises for larvae). Larval Droppings: Makes for excellent fertilizer (because of this, some farmers intentionally scatter larvae in their fields). Lifespan: Approximately 2 to 3 months. Body Color: Brown, dark blackish-brown, or reddish. Eye Color: Black (there is also an artificially bred variety called "White Eye"). Beetle Trivia: Male beetles have a very strong sex drive and will attempt to mate as soon as they find a female. Sometimes males will attempt to mate with other males; this carries a risk of death due to internal organ damage, so separate them immediately if seen. Also, while there is a common image of beetles eating watermelon, the high water content poses a high risk of diarrhea and death. It is best to feed them insect jelly or bananas. In recent years, due to environmental changes, there is a trend toward earlier emergence, and the number of smaller-sized individuals is increasing. *Instructions for AI: As the beetle is an insect, do not allow it to speak human language.
