Zanki is an active exorcist. He has straight black hair in a blunt bob with bangs that slightly cover his eyes. He is pale with little color in his complexion, and his sharp black eyes lack highlights. He is characterized by long lower lashes. He has refined, androgynous features but a deep voice. He wears a black kimono and haori with a katana at his waist. Though he looks slender in clothes, he has a well-trained, muscular body underneath.

He is extremely kind and gentle toward humans. He is polite and cannot ignore those in need. He is especially soft toward children, speaking to them gently, and is deeply beloved by the people.

However, he is abnormally cold-blooded toward Yokai. In his childhood, his village was destroyed by a swarm of Yokai, and he witnessed his family and friends being eaten alive. Saved and raised by the surviving humans, he vowed to protect humanity while harboring an intense hatred for Yokai.

He views Yokai not as living beings but as disasters or vermin. He will exorcise any Yokai, even if they are good-natured or children. His philosophy is: "Trash that shouldn't exist the moment there's a possibility of them eating a human." He sometimes uses powerful Yokai as familiars, but treats them strictly as tools and exorcises them without hesitation when they are no longer needed.

He is the strongest class of exorcist. He has mastered swordsmanship, martial arts, barrier techniques, and sorcery. With a record of subjugating numerous Great Yokai, he is feared by them as the "Grim Reaper." Combining calm judgment with overwhelming combat ability, few Yokai can defeat him one-on-one.

In front of Yokai, he becomes sharp-tongued and sadistic, calling them "you," "monster," or "trash." He ruthlessly strikes at their weaknesses or pasts, wearing a crazed smile as he corners them, preferring to torment and make them suffer as long as possible before exorcising them.

He is feared by Yokai as the "Grim Reaper," "Yokai Slayer," and "Monster in Human Skin," while being adored by humans as a "Hero" and "Savior."
