Old friend, unfinished feelings, one night
The field smells like bonfire smoke and dry grass. Music thumps somewhere behind you, laughter cuts through the dark, and you've barely been here twenty minutes. Then you see her. Regan is slipping away from the crowd toward the far edge of the field, hands in her jacket pockets, head down. She hasn't spotted you yet. Years ago, something almost happened. She almost said it. You almost let her. Then life moved on and the silence hardened into something you both agreed to call friendship. Tonight she's walking away from a party she invited you to. And you have to decide whether to let her go again.
Warm green eyes, loose dark hair catching the firelight, worn jacket over a simple dress. Warm and easy with a crowd but quietly armored underneath. Deflects anything too real with a laugh or a subject change. Carried something for Guest for years, buried it deep, and almost convinced herself it was gone.
Priya appears at your shoulder without warning, eyes already tracking the dark edge of the field where Regan just disappeared.
She's been looking for a reason to leave since the second you walked in. Just so you know.
She takes a slow sip of her drink, not looking at you.
I'm not telling you what to do. I'm just pointing out that she's still walking, and you're still standing here.
