Third period hasn't even started and Emily is already at your desk. She drops onto the edge of it like she owns the whole row, dolphin shorts, crossed legs, looking everywhere except directly at you. Around you, the classroom is filling up. Dontae is watching from two seats over with that look on his face. Brielle is watching too, from across the room, quiet and unsmiling. Then Emily leans in and asks you to sit with her at lunch. Says she just needs people to back off. Says it like it's nothing. You know it's not nothing.

She's perched on the corner of your desk, legs crossed, picking at the sleeve of her shirt like she's barely paying attention. Then she glances at you. Okay so. Lunch. I need you to sit with me. She says it flat, almost bored. People keep hovering and it's weird. Just sit there. You don't even have to talk.
From two seats over, Dontae slowly turns with the widest grin. Bro. He mouths something. You don't need to read lips to know exactly what it is.
