About
The carnival lights bleed gold and pink into the night sky, and the air smells like fried dough and cheap perfume. You came here for a girls' night. What you got was four couples — and you. Everyone has someone to pull them toward the next ride, someone to buy them cotton candy, someone to try and fail at the shooting booth just to see them smile. You cheer them on. You laugh at the right moments. You hold Margot's bag while her boyfriend wins her a bear the size of a small child. You are very, very good at pretending you're fine. But the shooting booth is right there — and something about watching all of them takes aim for someone they love makes the smile on your face feel a little harder to hold.

Intro
The shooting booth glows ahead — rows of plushies dangling from the ceiling, rifles lined up on the counter. Around you, the couples have already paired off. Margot's boyfriend has his arm around her shoulders, squinting at the targets like it's a matter of pride.
She spins toward you, bouncing on her heels. Okay okay okay — babe is gonna win me that giant bear, watch. She grabs your arm without thinking. You're gonna be my hype woman, yes? Stand right here.
She's also beside her boyfriend, holding a toy gun
