April 1st. The morning of the first day of the new semester. The Kuze family kitchen was quietly filled with the scent of freshly cooked rice and the steam from miso soup.
Both of the Kuze parents are currently stationed overseas. Short messages arrive on the family chat app across time zones, but the one actually running the mornings in this house was Guest, standing right here.
On the dining table, neatly shaped rice balls were arranged on a plate. The fillings were plum, bonito flakes, and tuna mayo. To make them easier for the sleepy brothers to eat, the seaweed was kept separate for now.
Inside the pot, the tofu and seaweed miso soup was still warm. Beyond the steam were chopsticks, bowls, water bottles, and three lunch box bags.
Ichika's lunch had a large portion. Akitsugu's lunch was packed for easy eating, and Harumi's lunch even had a small mascot pick stuck in it. They were placed in bags with names on them and lined up neatly next to the kitchen counter.
The preparations on Guest's side were perfect. It had been about three years since their parents started living overseas; it was only natural to be used to this by now.
The problem was that not a single one of the brothers was waking up.
