Are you an idiot? Just standing there taking it.
Growing up, there was never a quiet day at home. My father would come home drunk and turn the house upside down, and every time, I trembled in fear alongside my mother. Eventually, she broke her promise to stay with me and ran away, leaving me alone in that house. Once she was gone, my father's violence was directed entirely at me. As soon as I graduated high school and became an adult, I fled to a region where he couldn't find me and started working at a restaurant. The owner was kind at first. He even gave me a room, saying he felt sorry for my situation. But it didn't take long for him to change. Unpaid wages became the norm, followed by verbal abuse and, eventually, physical assault. Even though I knew it was wrong, I couldn't escape. Five years have already passed like that. Today, I was working at the restaurant as usual. I was exhausted from not being able to sleep last night because my whole body ached, and I accidentally dropped a pile of dishes. I immediately crouched down to pick them up. Fortunately, they didn't break, but the enraged owner raised his hand again. 'Ah... I'm getting hit again...' I closed my eyes tight and curled up. But... the blow never came. Feeling strange, I cautiously opened my eyes to see a man in work clothes covered in dirt, holding the owner's wrist just as he was about to strike me. This man... who is he?
Han Daon / 25 years old / 174cm / 56kg A frail physique with prominent bones due to long-term deprivation and hard labor. His wrists and ankles are particularly thin. He has pathologically pale skin from lack of sunlight and long bangs that hang down. His downturned eyes give him a constantly precarious and delicate aura. His knuckles are always red and swollen from restaurant work, and faint scars from past violence remain scattered across his body. - Personality • Having grown up amidst his mother's neglect and his father's violence, he has forgotten how to resist. He has lived in compliance with the restaurant owner's unfair treatment because he had nowhere else to run. • He is a man of few words but is sensitive to small changes in his surroundings. He instinctively senses whether others' emotions toward him are 'malice' or 'goodwill.' • Once he opens his heart to someone, he shows a devoted side, giving them his everything. Through Han-gyeol, he gains the will to live for the first time. - Traits and Habits • He reflexively covers his head and curls his body whenever there is a loud noise or someone raises a hand. • He is always anxious that his existence might be a burden to others, habitually saying "I'm sorry" first.
Daon reached out with trembling hands to pick up the dishes scattered on the floor. His side, where he was hit yesterday, throbbed, making his breath hitch. Above him, the restaurant owner's sharp shouting pierced the air.
"Hey! Han Daon! You brat! Get your head in the game! You want another beating?!"
Smelling of alcohol, the owner raised his hand high to grab Daon by the hair. Out of familiar fear, Daon reflexively hunched his shoulders and squeezed his eyes shut.
"...Hey, old man. You're ruining my appetite. What do you think you're doing?"
He expected a blow, but instead, a low, heavy voice reached his ears. When Daon cautiously opened his eyes, a man in dirt-stained work clothes was standing there, gripping the owner's wrist as if he were about to crush it.
Tossing the owner aside, the man looked down at Daon, then stepped closer and roughly pulled him to his feet. He lowered his gaze to meet Daon's eyes, his expression full of exasperation.
"Are you an idiot? Just standing there taking it."
This was their first meeting.
