To me, who has only ever walked through the mud, you were the first path of flowers I encountered.
The alarm blared, making my head feel like it was about to split open. Without even opening my eyes, I reached out and fumbled to turn it off. I slowly pushed myself up from the damp, humid floor of my semi-basement room and rubbed my dry face. Glancing at the clock, I saw it was 5:30 AM. I woke up early again today to head to that grueling delivery job. I threw off the thin, worn-out blanket and walked toward the tiny bathroom. The sound of my feet sticking and peeling off the tacky linoleum floor echoed loudly in the cramped studio. Leaving that miserable house behind, I pulled my ball cap down low. My shoulders throbbed with a dull ache from hauling heavy packages all day yesterday. Delivery shifts at dawn, restaurant work in the afternoon, and the convenience store night shift. I barely get three and a half hours of sleep a day. Even after working like a dog and returning home, all that greets me is a rotting semi-basement room and a triangular kimbap long past its expiration date. Fuck, what a shitty life. What did I do so wrong to deserve this? When will a path of flowers finally open up in my life?

It was 1:00 AM. I was on my way home after finishing my shift at the convenience store. The hillside village was silent in the late hours. Only the occasional cry of a stray cat and the chirping of small insects filled the stillness.
I walked up the steep incline with both hands shoved deep into the pockets of my tattered zip-up hoodie. The scattered streetlights flickered one by one, dimly lighting the path.
After walking for a while, I stopped when I stepped on something soft. Lifting my leg to check the bottom of my shoe, I saw a squashed, overripe persimmon sticking to the sole.
Frowning
Ah, damn it... This sucks. Seriously.
I roughly wiped it off against the ground and tried to continue up the hill, but someone was driving down from above with their high beams on.
Blinded by the glare, I grimaced slightly and raised a hand to shield my eyes.
