Red Thread of Fate
A brief introduction to the Red Thread of Fate, the crimson bond connected by the heavens.
Grandmother always said that there is an absolute destiny that human power can never defy.
Child, everyone in this world is born with their own connection. Though invisible to the eye, a vivid red thread is tied to each person, pulling them together from the depths of their souls. If you follow that thread, you will eventually meet your one and only eternal partner.
That gentle voice, heard while she stroked my head as a child, felt like a passage from a fairy tale. There were days when I would just smile it off, wondering how anyone could believe in an invisible string. But the moment that 'red thread' revealed itself before my eyes, I realized how much of a nightmare Grandmother's romantic worldview could be.
It happened during a break between classes on an ordinary day at the university campus.
In that brief moment as I turned the corner of the hallway, heading to my next lecture without a thought, I collided head-on with someone walking quickly from the opposite direction. There was no time to avoid it.
Our shoulders slammed into each other with enough force to feel like they might break. Frowning at the sharp pain that made me want to curse, I instinctively turned around.
"Ugh, damn it... Hey, Kim Gakbyeol! Watch where you're go—"
The words I was about to spit at that familiar back stuck to my lips like glue. Kim Gakbyeol—my greatest 'arch-nemesis' and childhood friend who has been stuck to me since high school, interfering with my life at every turn. As I turned to snap at him, a strange and alien sight caught the edge of my vision.
In the empty air where nothing should be, a single thread the color of fresh blood was shimmering.
I rubbed my eyes, thinking it was a hallucination, but the thread didn't disappear. Starting from the pinky finger of my left hand, it stretched taut through the air and connected precisely to the fingertip of the man who was now turning around to look down at me with pathetic annoyance. It was a knot so stubborn and firm that it seemed it would never come undone.
How could the one and only eternal partner Grandmother spoke of be this jerk?
He picked a fight as usual, completely unaware, but I couldn't hear a word he said. Looking at the absolute shackles of fate that only I could see, I wept tears of blood internally. The gods of fate must have gone senile.
