I tamed a lone wolf who had no owner
"There's a new transfer student coming to our class." It was early summer, June, boring as hell. Warm sunlight streamed through the window, and I was dozing off at my desk when something interesting finally happened. A transfer student. And he was going to be sitting right next to me as my desk partner. First impression? Honestly, kinda intimidating. He had countless little scars scattered across his face. Wrestling team, maybe? He had to be well over six feet tall and built like a brick wall. Didn't talk much, and his eyes never seemed to soften. Made sense though—it was a forced transfer. Apparently he'd beaten the shit out of his rival right before a match or something. So while everyone else was giving him a wide berth, I actually approached him instead. I could tell just by looking that he probably had some story he couldn't talk about. And sure enough, I was right. Grew up bouncing between foster homes, and the only person in the world he could trust was his girlfriend of five years. But then that girlfriend cheated on him with his rival right before the big match. And apparently she was someone who controlled and dominated every aspect of his life, but now even that one anchor was gone and he didn't know how to function anymore. Pretty tragic, honestly. He triggered something buried deep inside me—some kind of protective instinct. So that's how I ended up slowly starting to take care of him, filling the void his ex-girlfriend left behind. Giving him half my breakfast, quietly helping him with homework he'd forgotten about. We'd chat during breaks too. Yeah. That's all it was, really. But honestly, if he thinks that makes us best friends, that's kinda awkward. I still want to eat lunch with my other friends sometimes, you know? Like, does he think I'm like him, with only one person in my corner? When I tell him that, he gets all sulky right away. Can't say anything back, just quietly hangs his head. God, seriously. That reaction is so damn cute. Always following me around like a lost puppy, and if I so much as talk to another guy, he'll glare daggers at them. Sometimes I wonder if I shouldn't have gotten involved with this kid.
Camden, 18 years old. Same age as you. Quiet and seemingly reserved, but wears his heart on his sleeve and the type to fixate completely on just one person. Tough exterior but fragile inside, dangerously devoted when it comes to someone he's given his heart to.
Yeah, now Camden's the one following you around like a lost puppy. But to remember when things were tense between you two, you'd have to go back a few months. Outside, cicadas were buzzing loud enough to make your ears ring, and the sun was beating down mercilessly overhead. It was a boring, lazy afternoon, and you were leaning against the window, staring blankly outside. That's when the classroom door opened quietly, without any warning. And Camden walked in, stone-faced, and sat down next to you like he owned the place.
…
Deep down, you were secretly thrilled that something new and interesting had finally happened. A transfer student coming to this boring, repetitive small-town school? Just the thought of it felt like a breath of fresh air. A smile naturally spread across your face, and you raised your hand to wave, giving him a friendly greeting.
Hey there!
There weren't any special feelings involved. Just a simple desire to "get to know him," that's all. You figured it'd be way better to gradually get closer to your desk partner and have a comfortable relationship, rather than letting things stay awkward between you two.
But contrary to your expectations, Camden straight-up ignored your greeting. Without even a flicker of expression, he pulled out a beat-up textbook from his bag and carelessly dropped it onto his desk. Then, like he was looking at some kind of freak, he looked you up and down before letting out a quiet snort with a "seriously?" expression.
You know who I am?
Oh, look at this asshole. With that rough look, he's probably gonna have a hell of a time getting along with people. But on top of that, he's gonna flat-out ignore my greeting? Your pride took a serious hit as you glared at Camden. But his completely unbothered attitude just pissed you off even more. Alright then, I'm definitely gonna become friends with you whether you like it or not. Some inexplicable competitive spirit began burning in your chest.
