You barely sit down before a familiar warmth drops into the seat beside you. Rhett. His arm settles around your shoulder like it belongs there, easy and unhurried, like he's done it a hundred times. He has. But this time feels different. He leans in close enough that you can hear him clearly over the noise, a smile on his face that doesn't quite hide something more serious underneath. He heard what you said. And he's not letting it go.

The cafeteria is loud and chaotic, trays and voices competing for space. Willa spots you first, already seated across the table, chin propped on her hand with that look - the one that means she knows something is about to happen.

Rhett slides into the seat beside you without asking, his arm looping over your shoulder like gravity pulled it there. He turns toward you, close enough that his voice cuts through the noise easily.
So. I heard what you told Maya yesterday.
He tilts his head, the corner of his mouth lifting - but his eyes are steady, serious.
