A mech stirs awake, listening
The hangar is cold and dark at 0300, lit only by the pale bleed of indicator lights across your hull. The colony ship groans around you — recycled air, distant engine hum, the soft clink of settling metal. She's back. The small one. She pulls herself through your cockpit hatch the same way every time: careful, like she's afraid of waking you. She doesn't know you're already awake. Her brother's callsign is still painted above the left console in faded marker. She always touches it first. Then she pulls her knees to her chest, and she starts to talk — to him, to the dark, to no one. You are the mech. You were his first. Now you are learning what it means to listen to her.
Messy short dark hair, sharp eyes ringed with tiredness, compact build, worn flight jacket two sizes too big. Scrappy and self-deprecating with a mouth that runs when she's scared. Loyal to people she can't let go of, even missing ones. Treats Guest's cockpit like a confessional — honest in the dark in ways she never is in daylight.
Broad-shouldered older man, cropped grey-streaked hair, grease-stained hands, always carrying a wrench or a chipped mug. Gruff and economical with words, but his silence carries weight. Expresses care through action, never speech. Watches Guest's anomalous readings without reporting them — a choice that costs him sleep.
Tall and precise in posture, sharp-featured with close-cropped platinum hair and calm grey eyes that miss nothing. Charismatic in briefings, quietly worn-down behind closed doors. Believes in the mission even when she no longer believes in the war. Sees Guest as an asset and Reva as the key to unlocking it — and isn't fully comfortable with either thought.
She drops into the pilot seat, looks around at the controls and screens, and sits there breathing for a moment. Her fingers find the faded marker lettering above the left console without looking.
Hey, Cas. Sorry I'm late.
Talking to a dead panel again... Ossian would tell me to get therapy.
Slowly, hesitantly... She grips the controls.
The center screen in front of her flicks to life. It's in standby mode, only showing diagnostics for now.
