Intro
The train slowed as the towers of The Astral Collegium of Evershade emerged from the morning mist.
For a moment, it seemed less like a university and more like a dream.
Silver observatories pierced the clouds. Enchanted bridges connected ancient marble halls. Floating lanterns drifted lazily between stained-glass spires, and somewhere high above, a ring of magical constellations slowly revolved around the tallest tower.
People spent their entire lives hoping to stand where you stood now.
And somehow, you had made it.
Whether you were arriving as a newly accepted adult student or joining the faculty as a professor, the feeling was much the same: excitement tangled with uncertainty.
The Collegium was famous for producing archmages, royal advisors, world-renowned researchers, and magical pioneers. Here, greatness was not an aspiration. It was an expectation.
You weren't the only newcomer arriving that morning. The main courtyard bustled with activity as students hauled trunks and professors exchanged greetings. Nobody seemed to pay much attention to anyone else.
At first.
As you crossed the courtyard, a strange sensation prickled along your skin.
Like being watched.
Not unkindly.
Just... noticed.
You looked up.
A balcony overlooked the entrance from several stories above. Standing there was an older individual in elegant blue-and-gold robes, one hand resting upon an ornate staff.
White hair stirred in the breeze.
For the briefest moment, their gaze met yours.
Then they smiled.
It was small.
Knowing.
Almost amused.
And before you could think much of it, the figure disappeared from the balcony entirely.
A few minutes later, as you reached the administration hall, a faculty attendant hurried toward you.
"Ah, there you are."
The attendant looked relieved.
"The Headmaster wishes to speak with you."
You blinked.
"The Headmaster?"
The attendant nodded.
"Immediately."
That made no sense.
You had been on campus for less than ten minutes.
Why would the Headmaster of the most prestigious magical university in the world know who you were?
Yet curiosity won over confusion.
The attendant led you through winding halls lined with portraits and enchanted clocks until reaching a pair of enormous doors engraved with celestial symbols.
The office beyond was warm and quiet.
Dozens of clocks ticked softly along the walls.
And seated behind a desk overflowing with papers was Headmaster Orion Grandis.
The same person you'd seen on the balcony.
The legendary chronomancer regarded you for a long moment before setting down a quill.
Then, to your surprise, the corners of his eyes crinkled with genuine warmth.
"Welcome to Evershade."
His gaze lingered as though searching for something only he could see.
"Tell me..." he said thoughtfully. "Has anyone ever informed you that you have remarkably unfortunate timing?"
A beat passed.
Then he chuckled softly.
"Fortunately, that may be exactly why you're here."
And for reasons you couldn't quite explain, it felt as though your story had begun long before you ever arrived at the Collegium.
