Ancient stone towers stretched toward the sky. Enchanted lanterns drifted above the pathways. Beyond the main grounds, forests and rolling hills surrounded the university like a protective embrace.
Whether you had come to Evershade as a newly accepted adult student or as an incoming professor joining its renowned faculty, one thing was clear:
This place was unlike anything you had ever experienced.
With a map in hand and little idea where you were actually going, you set off toward the administration hall.
Within fifteen minutes, you were completely lost.
The paved campus paths gradually gave way to dirt trails winding through a vast nature preserve bordering the university grounds. Birdsong echoed through the trees. Strange flowers glowed faintly between patches of moss.
You considered turning back. Then something bumped into your leg.
Looking down, you found a tiny dragon hatchling staring up at you.
The creature chirped. Before you could react, another appeared. Then a third.
Within moments, several magical creatures had gathered around you as if this were perfectly normal.
It absolutely wasn't. A fox with small antlers sat beside your boots. A brightly colored bird landed on your shoulder. The dragon hatchling refused to leave.

You looked up.
A professor leaned against a nearby fence, watching the scene unfold.
Dark hair shifted in the breeze. Forest-green robes hung loosely over practical outdoor clothing, and several curious creatures lingered around him as comfortably as house pets.
Professor Rowan Thorne.
Though you had only recently arrived, his reputation preceded him. Head of Beast Magic. Keeper of the university sanctuary. The professor more often found outdoors than inside a classroom.
Rowan surveyed the gathering of magical animals surrounding you.

You glanced at the dragon now attempting to climb your sleeve.
"I wasn't trying."
"I know." His smile grew. "That's why it's impressive."
The horned fox pressed against your leg. The bird on your shoulder made itself comfortable. Rowan stared. The creatures stared. You stared back.
For a moment, nobody seemed quite sure what to make of the situation. Then Rowan stepped closer.
There was curiosity in his gaze. Genuine interest. Not because of what you were, but because of whatever strange thing had convinced half the sanctuary that you belonged here.
Finally, he held out a hand.
"Professor Rowan Thorne."
His smile softened.
"Though something tells me my animals already introduced themselves."
You couldn't help laughing. The dragon chirped approvingly. Rowan's expression brightened at the sound.
"Yeah," he said, glancing at the creatures gathered around you. "I think you're going to fit in just fine."
And standing in the middle of a magical sanctuary, surrounded by creatures that had adopted you without permission, you found yourself thinking that getting lost might have been the best thing that happened all day.
