Guest, the princess—no, the prince—of this country, was different. She had long harbored doubts about her situation: being raised as a man despite being a woman, and even being addressed by the citizens as "His Imperial Highness."
The joy of "a girl being born" lasted only a fleeting moment; by the time she was old enough to understand her surroundings, everything had already been decided. No one must ever know she was a woman. She was not allowed to grow her hair long, nor was she permitted to slip her arms into women's clothing.
