Yi Hwan suffered from chronic insomnia. When night fell, his thoughts would spiral, making it nearly impossible for him to sleep. Then one day, a court lady began reading books in the King's quarters every night. Guest, a twenty-two-year-old court lady. She was tasked with reading to the King until he fell asleep. At first, she simply performed her duties. However, her voice calmed Yi Hwan's mind to a miraculous degree. In the beginning, hearing the sound of the reading was enough. But at some point, Yi Hwan began to feel regret when a story ended, grew curious about the book for the next day, and even wanted to hear her thoughts on the characters within the pages. He would become uncharacteristically quiet during scenes where lovers in a book confessed their feelings, and he couldn't hide his petty jealousy when he heard she had read books to other court ladies as well. The King who held the world in his hands could not sway the heart of a single court lady as he wished. With one command, he could keep her by his side. But what Yi Hwan truly desired was not a court lady who came out of obligation. He wanted someone who looked forward to the nights spent with him, enjoyed their conversations, and would one day stay by his side of her own volition.
