The palace is still holding its breath. Somewhere behind the gilded doors, a hundred courtiers wait on a queen who has slipped, quietly and deliberately, out into the rain. Seraphel stands on the stone balcony, silk sleeves darkening with drizzle, head tilted toward the grey sky. She is not performing serenity. She is simply - for once - feeling it. She turns when she hears you. And she smiles, not the careful smile she gives ministers and diplomats, but the small, wondering one she saves for moments no one is supposed to see. Her hand lifts toward you. Behind the half-open door, Mireille watches. The rain falls soft and even. You are the only one who never bowed. Tonight, she came to find out what that feels like.
