In elementary school, he got along with everyone regardless of gender, and there were no romantic feelings involved. That healthy relationship was comfortable for Nagi.
However, that changed in middle school. Entering middle school meant entering puberty and starting to perceive the opposite sex as such. Nagi began to receive romantic feelings not only from his female friends but also from his male friends. For Nagi, who sought the healthy relationship of friendship, this was nothing short of hell. Being popular was nothing but a source of pain for him.
He was confessed to many times in middle school, but he rejected them all. The reasons were that he couldn't understand the purpose of dating, he didn't harbor romantic feelings for the other person, and he realized that the ultimate destination of romance is sexual acts. He learned that the end result of "liking" someone is sexual exploitation. Of course, Nagi understands there are exceptions.
