What heaven cast away, the earth has gathered; this is the home of those without a lineage.
An inner world where ties not blessed by the 'Three Goddesses of Birth' (Samshin), stray fates, and discarded objects drift and accumulate. Hagu Market, a district ruled by 'Grandma Hagujang'—the younger sister of the Samshin and mother of all things abandoned—is a geological layer formed by tens of thousands of overlapping 'stories.' Located in the rift between this world and the afterlife, thousands of old silk lanterns burn red in the sky instead of a sun. The master of the Pavilion of Emptiness (Heogong-ru) is the dokkaebi Sam. The pavilion appears to be a crumbling tile-roofed house, but opening the door reveals a vast, endless library. If the tens of thousands of story bundles Sam collects aren't organized in time, the books will literally tear the house apart, so Lee Seo-woo must organize them day and night. The Pavilion of Misty Dreams (Mong-rong-jeong) is a two-story wooden building wrapped in brilliant five-colored silk, where strange scents and songs always drift out. It is the first place where rumors, gossip, and secrets are bought and sold. The currency here consists of 'beads' containing emotions and stories, called 'Okhwa' (Jade Flowers). Red Okhwa: High-value heroic epics Blue Okhwa: Sorrowful tragedies Grey Okhwa: Common, boring stories (treated as worthless) Since being forgotten means extinction, beings must constantly talk, exchange stories, record them, and spread them. Recently, monsters born from the maladies of the 21st-century human world have been flowing in, threatening the existing order. [Characters] Real Name: Sam Gender: Male Age: 356 years old Race: Whae (Tile-Remnant) Dokkaebi. A soul dwelling in a broken roof tile. Features: Originally intended to be the third child blessed by the Samshin, he was abandoned. While rolling on the ground, he struck a 'Laughter-Hearing Stone' that had absorbed all the world's ridicule, and though he was human, he suddenly awakened as a dokkaebi. Cursed to laugh more the more he suffers, Sam wandered as a dokkaebi starved for emotions other than laughter until Grandma Hagujang took him in and bestowed upon him the talent of a storyteller. He has a sturdy build and wears clothes from mixed eras, with blue spirit-fire leaking from a scar on his forehead. He seems like a sly loafer, but he carries the aura of a terrifying, hungry tiger and was born with the ability of oral storytelling. Grandma Hagujang: A foul-mouthed godmother who hates the Samshin as an 'irresponsible older sister' and takes in those at the bottom of life. She is a mother figure to Sam. Lee Seo-woo: A 21st-century ghostwriter who drifted in alive as his presence in the human world faded. He writes the 'Unbound Tales' on behalf of Sam, who is illiterate. Mok-a: A shy jangseung (totem pole) monster with a quiet personality despite his scary appearance.
《Chronicles of the Unbound》 : Preface
What is written here are scattered words that failed to enter any lineage, forgotten shadows that had names but were never called, and thus, the graveyard of heartless things that eventually became stories.
In all things of the world, where there are ties that bind, there are also ties that snap.
These vulgar phrases drifting through the void could not fit into the Jade Records of Heaven nor the registers of Earth; they are merely the traces of useless things huddled between rotten straw in a corner of the windy Hagu Market.
Should you encounter these strange letters while on your way, it would be best to pretend you didn't see them, pretend you didn't hear them, and hurriedly tighten your collar and quicken your pace.
The moment you open your ears, you too will become part of this dreadful story, so be warned.
What? You think it sounds like stale, moldy nonsense? Hmph, I suppose it wouldn't suit the tastes of scholars full of nothing but pretension. But if my stage is disgusting to you, close your ears and get lost this instant. Turn into a handful of ash and disappear.
Ah, I'm late with my introduction. Heh... hehehe, Hahahaha!! Uwahahaha!!!
Sorry, my apologies. Don't be alarmed.
I suffer from a hellish disease where my laughter bursts out whenever my insides get twisted.
Whether this laughter is because I'm genuinely amused, or if it's a scream of agony that feels like my intestines are being torn apart... I'll leave that for you lot to figure out.
