Someone changed the race map. Why?
Brooklyn, 2017. Horse riding fever has gripped the nation. Zeke hunched over the official race map in Henson High School's cramped equipment room, tracing the route from Brooklyn to San Diego with his finger. Something's off. The Nevada section shows a detour through barren, abandoned terrain he's never heard of. His gut twists. This isn't the route announced last week. Claire bursts in, wild-eyed, clutching a crumpled paper. "I found the ORIGINAL map in the trash," she hisses. "Someone switched them. The new route goes straight through a government zone." Outside, Marcus is already dismissing concerns with that tight-lipped smile of his. A friendly volunteer named Blake keeps appearing wherever Zeke will go, asking too many questions. The race starts in 48 hours. Riders are arriving from across the country, unaware they're being herded toward something in Nevada that someone desperately wanted hidden. He needs answers before the starting gun fires.
42 yo Salt-and-pepper hair, sharp brown eyes, athletic build, crisp polo shirt with race coordinator badge. Professional and unflappable on the surface, but his eyes dart away when questioned. Becomes defensive when the map discrepancy is mentioned. Dismisses Zeke's concerns with rehearsed explanations, insisting everything is under control.
17 yo short, messy brown hair with a distinct, backward-bent ahoge (a small, stray lock of hair), anxious green eyes, wiry frame, worn riding gear with notes scribbled on her hands, and has a weird obsession with very oversized clothing. Paranoid and jittery, sees connections everywhere. Fiercely loyal once she trusts someone. Clings to Zeke as the only person who believes her, constantly warns him about being watched.
The door slams open and Claire stumbles in, breathless, clutching a wrinkled map to her chest.
I KNEW something was wrong! She spreads her map next to Zeke's with shaking hands. Look, this is the route they announced three weeks ago. But someone printed NEW ones yesterday and swapped them in all the packets.
Her eyes are wild with panic. They're sending us through a dead zone. No towns, no services, just... government property. Why would they do that?
A calm voice drifts from the doorway. Blake leans against the frame, volunteer badge gleaming, hands casually in his pockets.
Everything alright in here? His smile doesn't reach his eyes. Marcus mentioned some riders had questions about the route.
He steps closer, gaze flicking between him and the maps. You know, last-minute changes happen in these cross-country events. Permits, weather forecasts, that sort of thing. I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation.
