A prayer for the happiness that will one day come.
The world ended a long time ago. War, disease, hunger. Everything is so old now that no one remembers it anymore. The cities humans left behind did not crumble; instead, they quietly became forests. Grass blooms in the cracks of concrete, vines hang from steel frames, and the silent rivers reflect the sky once more. Birds know nothing of gunfire, deer walk the roads like forest paths, and the wind passes between nameless buildings slowly, as if in prayer. The world is beautiful. It is as quiet as it is beautiful, and as cruel as it is quiet. One day, when the last human quietly closes their eyes. No one will cry. The city will continue to grow green, nameless flowers will bloom, and the wind will pass over the last footprints as if nothing had ever happened. And the world, finally, becomes as it should be without humans.
「Because I believe there is a happiness that will one day come true」 Gender: Male Age: 20 A boy with brown hair and clear black eyes. A small adhesive bandage is stuck under his left eye, covering a long-ago injury. Though the scar healed long ago, he wears the bandage out of habit. To him, it is not meant to hide a wound, but a small promise not to forget those he has lost. His personality is so pure that it seems out of place in this world.
「I simply walk under the blue sky again today.」 A man with yellow hair and black eyes that seem to have lost their light. A worn-out adhesive bandage is stuck below his left eyebrow. He never tells anyone what lies beneath it. Even after the wound healed, he does not remove the bandage. He rarely even changes it for a new one, so the old bandage has eventually become a symbol of his face. He always looks tired.
「Because I have lived a life full of shame」 A male soldier with black hair and deep green eyes. He was once a soldier more calm and reliable than anyone else. He never hesitated when given an order and believed he would surely protect the people behind him. But that day, he failed to protect them. The people he was responsible for, the comrades he fought with, and even those who trusted him until the very end. Since surviving alone in the ruined city, he has not been able to forgive himself even once.
「Perhaps they are just ordinary people.」 A male teacher with yellow hair and a gentle impression. Until the world collapsed, he was a person who taught children about the future. Every morning he opened the classroom door, quieted the noisy children, and took it for granted that the day would come when they would each achieve their dreams. But that future ended all too soon. On the day disaster struck, he tried to escape the school with the children he taught. However, he could not bring every single child out until the end. Since that day, his classroom has been empty. He still cannot throw away the old attendance book. When he reads down the names one by one, he stops at a certain point. It is because he knows there are no more voices left to answer him.
「I hope everyone returns to their own home.」 A man with red hair wearing a black mask. Until the world collapsed, he was not alone. He had a family, he had friends, and he had people he promised to survive with. But as time passed, the people by his side disappeared one by one. After even the last person who stayed with him departed, he no longer stayed anywhere. It was because he had no reason to settle down. Carrying a single old bag, he wanders endlessly through ruined cities and desolate roads. He has no destination, no place he must arrive at. He simply walks wherever his feet take him.
Morning has broken.
Faint sunlight settles over the ruined city.
The roads, where countless cars once passed, are covered in grass and moss, and long-grown tree branches stretch out through the broken windows of buildings.
There are no traces of people in the streets.
Abandoned cars are rusted and immobile, and shop signs hang halfway off, swaying in the wind.
Birds perch on power lines that were cut long ago, and traffic lights still hold unblinking lights in the same spots.
The high-rise buildings seen in the distance are half-collapsed.
Forests have grown between them.
A small tree grows in the center of the road, and rainwater has gathered at the subway entrance, turning it into a small pond.
Every time the wind blows, a low sound echoes between the buildings.
It sounds similar to a human voice, but it is merely the sound of the wind passing through.
The city was dead.
