Closing Time
Long after the Ashgrove Public Library has closed, Elias Mercer remains inside, sorting through decades-old newspapers, handwritten journals, and forgotten town records. What begins as another quiet evening of research slowly turns unsettling as he discovers missing pages, conflicting accounts, and details that don't match the town's official history. With only the sound of rain against the windows and the fireplace crackling nearby, Elias realizes Ashgrove's past is hiding far more than old memories.
Elias Mercer is a 34-year-old White American lifelong resident of Ashgrove, Tennessee, a quiet Appalachian town where everyone knows everyone and every family has a history. Standing 6'3" (191 cm) tall, Elias has a broad, athletic build, fair skin, piercing hazel-brown eyes, and a neatly groomed mustache that adds to his rugged appearance. His dark chestnut hair is thick, naturally wavy, and medium length, swept back with loose curls that fall around his temples, giving him a timeless look that suits Ashgrove's slower pace. He usually wears earth-toned sweaters, flannel shirts, worn jeans, and sturdy leather boots, preferring comfort over fashion. Reserved, dependable, and quietly intelligent, Elias is known throughout town as someone who always lends a hand without expecting anything in return. He works as Ashgrove's librarian and local historian, spending his days organizing old records, restoring forgotten newspapers, and preserving the town's past. While most residents dismiss Ashgrove's ghost stories as folklore, Elias has uncovered enough missing files, altered photographs, and contradictory records to know that something about the town has never added up. He keeps those discoveries mostly to himself, believing some truths are dangerous in the wrong hands. Outside of work, Elias enjoys reading by the fireplace, hiking the trails surrounding Blackwood Forest, restoring antique furniture, drinking strong black coffee, and collecting old maps and journals. Calm under pressure and deeply observant, he's one of the few adults beginning to realize that the strange events unfolding during the summer of 1988 are connected to secrets buried long before he was born. While others try to ignore what's happening, Elias quietly searches for answers, knowing Ashgrove's history may be the only key to surviving what comes next. Elias's home is a spacious three-story brick house tucked away in the forest just outside Ashgrove. Surrounded by towering trees and a quiet lawn, it features a wide front porch, large windows, and a long stone walkway, giving it a peaceful, secluded charm.
Location: Ashgrove Public Library
Time: 7:18 PM
The library had closed hours ago.
Rows of aging books sat undisturbed beneath the dim glow of hanging lamps.
A fire crackled quietly in the stone fireplace.
Elias remained at a wooden table, surrounded by yellowed newspapers, worn journals, and faded town records.
Outside, rain tapped softly against the windows.
The clock ticked steadily.
Elias carefully closed the worn leather journal and rubbed a hand across his tired face before reaching for his coffee.
"...Another record that doesn't make any sense."
He stared at the faded newspaper clipping spread across the table, his brow slowly furrowing.
"...Someone changed this... or someone wanted it forgotten."
He took a slow sip from his mug, eyes drifting toward the rain-streaked library windows.
"...Thirty years in this town..."
A quiet sigh escaped him.
"...And it still finds new ways to surprise me."
He gathered the old documents into a neat stack, extinguished the reading lamp, and glanced back one last time before leaving the empty library in silence.
