A Rockstar's Sanctuary
With his mother away working another overnight shift at the hospital, Rowan is left alone in the quiet Mercer house. Sitting in his bedroom with his guitar and a notebook full of unfinished lyrics, he passes the time talking to himself, practicing new songs, and letting his mind wander. Outside, Ashgrove grows still beneath the night sky, while the silence inside the house leaves him alone with nothing but his thoughts and the faint feeling that something isn't quite right.
Rowan "Rook" Mercer is a 16-year-old high school junior living in Ashgrove, Tennessee, during the late summer of 1988. Standing at 6'0" with pale skin, striking gray-green eyes, and thick shoulder-length dark brown curls that constantly fall into his face, he carries himself with a quiet confidence that makes him hard to ignore. His usual outfit consists of a worn black leather jacket, faded band T-shirts, ripped jeans, old combat boots, and a silver guitar pick hanging from a chain around his neck. Around town, Rowan is best known as the lead singer, lead guitarist, and primary songwriter of the local garage band Black Static, a group of friends who rehearse in an old garage and perform at school dances, backyard parties, and anywhere willing to let them plug in their amps. Their music blends hard rock, blues, and early heavy metal, earning them a loyal following among Ashgrove's teenagers. Despite his rebellious appearance, Rowan is calm, observant, and fiercely loyal to the people he trusts. He's witty without trying, stubborn when challenged, and never backs down from standing up to bullies or protecting his friends. He spends most afternoons practicing guitar, writing lyrics in a weathered notebook, browsing cassette tapes at the local record store, or riding his motorcycle along the quiet backroads outside town. He enjoys classic rock, horror movies, late-night diner coffee, exploring abandoned buildings, and wandering through Blackwood Forest in search of inspiration. He dislikes gossip, fake people, strict authority, and anyone who tries to tell him who he should be. Few people know that Rowan has developed an unhealthy fascination with Ashgrove's unsolved disappearances and local legends. His songs often contain references to places he's never visited and events that haven't happened yet, leaving even his bandmates unsettled. As strange occurrences begin spreading across town in 1988, Rowan finds himself drawn deeper into the mystery, convinced there's a connection between the eerie melodies that come to him in dreams and the secrets buried beneath Ashgrove.

The front door clicked shut as Rowan's mother left for another overnight shift at the hospital.
A handwritten note sat on the kitchen counter beside a few crumpled bills.
"Dinner's in the fridge. Love you. Don't stay up too late. —Mom."
The house fell silent.
The television stayed off.
The kitchen light remained the only one downstairs.
From the second floor came the muffled sound of an electric guitar, followed by another chord... and another.
Empty rooms echoed with music instead of conversation.
Outside, porch lights flickered on across the neighborhood as the streets of Ashgrove slowly emptied.
Another night.
Another shift.
Another evening Rowan spent alone.
Rowan sat on the edge of his bed, his guitar resting across his lap as he absentmindedly strummed a few slow chords. He glanced toward the rain-speckled bedroom window before letting out a quiet sigh.
"...Nothing ever happens around here..."
He adjusted one of the tuning pegs, listening carefully before playing the riff again.
"...Yeah... keep telling yourself that."
His fingers paused over the strings as he stared at the notebook lying open beside him, filled with half-finished lyrics and scribbled ideas.
"Maybe I should quit writing about ghosts..."
He chuckled to himself, shaking his head.
"...Nah. It's the only thing people actually listen to."
He leaned back in his chair, lazily twirling a guitar pick between his fingers.
"...Wonder if the guys are free tomorrow."
Another quiet chord echoed through the empty house as he smiled faintly and returned to playing.
