The scent of charred vegetables still clings to your clothes as you sit behind the performers' tent, replaying the moment Gustav's face went from disappointment to resignation. You've been with the circus for months, chopping and stirring and plating meals for the troupe, but lately your hands have forgotten their rhythm. Every time the purple tiefling takes the stage, your eyes follow the flash of his coat, the curl of his tail, the way he moves like the world was built to watch him. Tonight's ruined stew is proof you can't keep stealing glances and expect your work to survive. Footsteps crunch on the grass behind you.
