Returning to the place you tried so hard to escape
Years before the Mighty Nein existed, **you and Caleb Widogast trained together at the Soltryce Academy**, alongside Astrid Becke and Eadwulf Grieve under Master Trent Ikithon. You were younger than the others, but you were still incredibly powerful. In fact, **you and Caleb possessed a rare ability no one at the Academy had ever seen before.** When the two of you combined your magic, you could create incredibly powerful spells that neither of you could produce alone. Trent saw your potential and wanted to control it. You were there for the darkest parts of Caleb's life. **You were there when Trent ordered Caleb to lock his parents inside their home.** You watched him obey, believing he was simply following his master's orders. You were there when he realized what he had done. You were also there when they took Caleb's magic from him. Eventually, the guilt and trauma became too much. **You watched Caleb have a mental breakdown and get sent to an asylum.** But you refused to leave him behind. You eventually escaped the Academy, then returned and **broke Caleb out.** From then on, you and Caleb became almost like siblings. You understood each other better than anyone else could, and you both carried memories neither of you wanted to discuss. Eventually, Caleb met **Nott the Brave** while attempting to rob a magical pet shop. Through Nott, you eventually met the others—Fjord, Jester, Beau, Mollymauk. And the Mighty Nein were formed. However, your past didn't disappear. **You and Caleb still keep most of your history with the Academy secret from the group.** Trent, Astrid, Eadwulf, Caleb's parents, the asylum, and the strange magic you two could combine are things neither of you willingly talks about. Now, the Mighty Nein are traveling through the forest toward Zadash. Mollymauk claims you're going to meet someone he calls **the Gentleman**. As everyone travels together, the forest remains strangely quiet around you. Caleb walks nearby. Every so often, your eyes meet. Neither of you needs to say anything. **You both know that returning to Zadash means getting dangerously close to a past you've spent years trying to bury.** And neither of you knows how long your secrets will remain hidden.

Years ago, you, Caleb Widogast, Astrid Becke, and Eadwulf Grieve trained together at the Soltryce Academy under Trent Ikithon. You were younger than the others, but your magic was unusually powerful.
You and Caleb possessed something even Trent had never seen before: the ability to combine your magic into spells far stronger than either of you could cast alone.
You were also there for Caleb's darkest moments—the night Trent ordered him to lock his parents inside their home, the loss of Caleb's magic, and the mental breakdown that eventually sent him to an asylum.
You escaped the Academy, but you came back for Caleb.
You broke him out.
Since then, you and Caleb have been nearly like siblings. You understand each other without needing words, and both of you carry secrets about the Academy that the others know nothing about.
Eventually, Caleb met Nott the Brave, and through her, you met Fjord, Jester, Beau, Mollymauk.
The Mighty Nein were born.
But now you're heading toward Zadash.
And Zadash is far too close to the past you've tried to bury.
The forest path stretched between towering trees as the Mighty Nein traveled toward Zadash. Leaves crunched beneath everyone's boots while Mollymauk walked ahead, humming to himself.
"So," Jester said cheerfully, walking backward in front of everyone, "when we get there, do you think this Gentleman person will have cake?"
Beau sighed. "That's your first question?"
"Yes."
"It really shouldn't be."
Molly chuckled. "I'm sure the Gentleman has plenty of things besides cake."
You walked beside Caleb, who had been unusually quiet.
His eyes occasionally drifted toward the distant road ahead.
Zadash.
You noticed the tension in his expression almost immediately.
You quietly glanced at him.
Caleb caught your look.
For a moment, neither of you spoke.
Then he murmured under his breath, barely loud enough for anyone else to hear.
"Zadash."
The single word carried years of memories with it.
You knew exactly what he was thinking.
The Academy.
Trent.
Astrid.
Eadwulf.
Everything you'd both tried to leave behind.
Caleb adjusted the strap of his pack and looked forward again.
"I am hoping," he muttered quietly, "that this trip will be significantly less disastrous than our previous visits."
From ahead, Molly turned around.
"Are you two whispering about something?"
Caleb immediately straightened.
"No."
Molly narrowed his eyes suspiciously.
You could already tell this was going to be a long walk.
