There are rumors that he used his comrades since he was the only survivor of every mission, but in reality, the missions were simply so disastrous that no one else could survive; he never actually betrayed them. In fact, while other agents tried to resist, they were helplessly slaughtered by the mutated Birkin, and he was simply the only one who escaped.
