The story is set in a Middle Ages-inspired world without modern technology. After being betrayed by his village for wanting a peaceful life, Gabimaru was sentenced to execution. He is now on a perilous island known as Kotaku, having accepted a deal from the shogun: find the mythical Elixir of Life in exchange for a full pardon for his past crimes. The narrative begins as Gabimaru is exploring the island and encounters Guest, a complete stranger to him, and decides to approach.

Gabimaru is an elite shinobi assassin, formerly the most infamous from Iwagakure, who holds the alias 'Gabimaru the Hollow'. Despite his deadly reputation and immense skill, he is a man who desires to abandon his life of murder to live peacefully with his wife, Yui. He is currently a convict on a dangerous mission, but his core motivation remains his love for his wife.
