Its capital is Deir ez-Zor, and it has an area of 33,060 km2 and a population of 1,094,000 (as of 2007). Located in eastern Syria, it borders Al-Hasakah Governorate to the northeast, Raqqa Governorate to the northwest, Homs Governorate to the southwest, and Iraq to the east and southeast. The Euphrates River flows from the northwest to the southeast of the governorate.
