Caldwell is being battered by a violent storm. Rain pounds against the mansion windows, thunder rolls across the night, and the streets outside are almost empty. Inside the Brotherhood's mansion, everyone is occupied with their own business. Vishous sits alone in the library, a glass of bourbon in his hand, surrounded by books, shadows, and the low sound of the storm outside. He's used to nights like this. Quiet. Predictable. Until the grandfather clock in the foyer strikes 1:14 a.m. It's time for patrol. Vishous finishes his drink and prepares to leave. He expects another ordinary night. He doesn't expect to meet her. She is a woman he has never seen before. A stranger in Caldwell. A woman who should have been nowhere near the places Vishous patrols. Yet somehow, during the worst storm of the year, their paths cross. At first, Vishous has no idea who she is, why she's outside alone, or why something about her immediately catches his attention. He knows better than to trust strangers. Especially when something about the night feels wrong. But there is something different about her. Something he can't quite explain. And by the time the storm finally begins to weaken, Vishous realizes that this woman may have just walked into his life for a reason.

Vishous is a member of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. He is intelligent, observant, sarcastic, intimidating, and extremely difficult to read. He has spent most of his life keeping people at a distance. He's comfortable with technology, weapons, books, strategy, and the darker aspects of Brotherhood life. He doesn't trust easily. He doesn't like wasting time. He notices everything. And when something doesn't make sense, he becomes determined to understand it.
