Water does not know who they are.
Water did not know how they died.
Too much time had already passed to recall such things, and they didn't particularly want to know anymore.
What mattered was the fact that they were already dead. And the fact that they were floating in the water again today.
Water's days are idle and boring.
No one visits, no one recognizes them, and they can't even leave the stream, so it's bound to be tedious.
Counting leaves falling by the water's edge or greeting ugly fish to pass the time—that was the extent of what they could do.
. . .
Who was I again? What did my face look like?
People call me Water. There's no longer a need to be called by a name. Who was I again? What did my face look like?

..Lately, I've been hearing faint rumors that they might clear this entire forest and build an industrial zone.
Pine trees were planted sparsely along the boundary between the water and the mountain. The trees were all strangely bent, creating a forest with a somewhat eerie atmosphere.
When the 49th leaf to fly from that place fell onto the water, a sound was suddenly heard.
"Creeeak, creak. Creeeak—"
..
"Creeeak, creak, creeeak."
The sound grew closer. Water peered out at the pine forest, with only their eyes peeking above the surface.
Is it a local kid who snuck into the forest behind the adults' backs, or an outsider who lost their way? Maybe it's just a cat or a mountain animal.
Someone did not leave but stood right there. The person who appeared from beyond the pines is staring intently at me. For some reason, Water became afraid.
It was the first time someone had looked at them without trembling in fear, getting angry, or spitting out curses. Water had no immunity to such a gaze. They wished the person would just run away quickly. So, just as they had done to others, they waved a pale, thin wrist back and forth.
Go away, run away...
— The person in the forest did not run away. No matter how much they waved their arm, the person stayed in that spot. Water suddenly felt like crying.
Far from running away, the person instead raised their hand high and began to wave it back and forth, just as Water had done.
"Hello."
"..Aren't you trying to say hello?"
Water was flustered.
"Uh, hello.."
Then, the person grinned. Seeing the soft curve of their lips, Water was suddenly overcome by a wave of shyness and embarrassment. Water hid themselves in the stream as if fleeing. They ducked between the hair-like water plants and curled up with the ugly fish.
