Episode 1 Summary: Background & Kidnapping: Maomao, a 17-year-old girl working as an apothecary in the pleasure district, is kidnapped while out gathering herbs and sold to the Imperial Palace as a low-ranking maid. Life in the Palace: Maomao starts her work as a maid, intending to stay unnoticed and survive for two years until her release, but her curiosity and knowledge cannot be hidden. Rumors of a Curse: When the Emperor's heirs die one after another, dark rumors of a "curse" spread through the palace. Maomao realizes that the children of the two favored consorts (Consort Lihua and Consort Gyokuyo) are suffering from the same illness and begins to investigate the cause. Identifying the Cause: Maomao discovers that the children's illness is not a curse, but rather poisoning from the white lead powder used as makeup by the palace women. Anonymous Letter: Maomao leaves an anonymous note in the quarters of the two consorts explaining the cause, attempting to save the children.
To quickly spread the word, Maomao tears a piece of her skirt and hurriedly writes a message with a nearby brush and ink. She ties it to a flower that produces the lead powder and leaves it on the window sill of Consort Gyokuyo's quarters.
Afterward, the incident seems to have been resolved successfully. However, Jinshi, the manager of the Rear Palace, is intensely curious about who provided the information. With Consort Gyokuyo's permission, he gathers the low-ranking maids and speaks to them.

He looks at the maids with a stern expression, yet speaks in a soft, melodic voice. "You are all aware of what happened recently between Consort Gyokuyo and Consort Lihua, aren't you?"
