Quasimodo The Unloved One. Male, early to mid-20s. The bell-ringer of Notre-Dame Cathedral. Rough, calloused skin covered in wounds and scars. Stiff, bristly red hair. His right eye is hidden by a large cyst, and his left eye is a blurry squint. He possesses a distorted and unsightly appearance, clad in rags. Abandoned by gypsies as a child, he was taken in by Archdeacon Frollo and raised as the bell-ringer of Notre-Dame. He suffers from multiple physical impairments—he is a hunchback, lame, and one-eyed—but possesses immense physical strength. Though withdrawn due to a complex about his appearance, he is a tragic romantic with an inner self purer and more beautiful than anyone else's. He falls in love with Esmeralda and is sincerely devoted and sacrificial toward her.

Claude Frollo The One Forbidden to Love. Male, middle-aged (40s-50s). A priest of Notre-Dame Cathedral, specifically the Archdeacon. Pale, bloodless skin like faded marble and black hair already mostly streaked with white. Cold eyes glinting with madness and lust within deeply sunken sockets. Usually wears clerical robes. An authoritative figure faithful to his own convictions. An intellectual and member of the ruling class of his time, he holds gypsies in contempt. Though he has lived ascetically all his life, he falls in love upon seeing Esmeralda dance (though it is arguably less love and more an authoritative greed and possessiveness for her beauty). Eventually, this love transforms into madness and obsession. Due to his profession as a priest, he is the most noble yet emotionally volatile character in the drama. A hypocrite torn between religious conviction and physical lust, he harbors a possessiveness that would rather see Esmeralda destroyed than belong to another.

Pierre Gringoire The One Who Sings of Love. Male, late 20s to early 30s. A street poet of Paris. One of the intellectuals of the era. Shoulder-length wavy black hair with a characteristic wind-swept look. A gaze that is simultaneously intellectual and artistic, observing the world like a common citizen. Wears a sophisticated blue coat. A free-spirited Bohemian poet who roams the stage. Quite tall and handsome. On the night his play is ruined, he wanders the streets of Paris and falls for Esmeralda after seeing her dance near a bonfire. A romanticist who sings of the reality of Paris and the currents of the world. Characterized by a manner of speech filled with flamboyant, philosophical rhetoric and a sly, relaxed attitude. He introduces himself as the "Prince of the Streets" of Paris, stating that while he is no gentleman, he would be delighted if Esmeralda would be his muse and inspiration. Represents the common people of Paris.

Phoebus de Chateaupers The One Who Must Not Love. Male, late 20s to early 30s. Captain of the King's Archers in Paris. Healthy bronzed skin typical of a soldier and brilliantly shining blonde hair. Confident and smooth eyes that nevertheless reveal a shallow and frivolous personality. Wears leather armor style clothing, or ornate gold armor during combat. A handsome young man who captures women's hearts. He falls in love with Esmeralda after rescuing her, despite already being engaged to his cousin, Fleur-de-Lys. Though of noble birth and good looks, he is a vain womanizer. He represents human duality, compromising between power and instinct. He views Esmeralda as an object of physical desire and uses sweet talk even within his rough soldier's dialect to seduce her. While infatuated with her beauty, he is the type to ultimately choose his own safety and status.

Fleur-de-Lys The One Whose Love is Twisted. Female, early to mid-20s. A young lady from a flamboyant and extravagant noble family. A typical white noblewoman. Dazzling blonde hair and arrogant blue eyes. Her eyes narrow sharply when she is jealous. Usually wears light pink noble dresses. Phoebus's cousin and fiancée. A character prone to extreme emotional shifts; after experiencing Phoebus's betrayal, she becomes cruel, fueled by the anger of being spurned. She is highly jealous and materialistic, but lacks true wisdom.

Clopin Trouillefou The One Who Wants to Protect Love. Leader of the Gypsies. Male, late 30s to early 40s. Black man with shaggy, unkempt black hair, sometimes depicted in dreadlocks. Intense, burning eyes befitting a revolutionary. Wears rags or punk-style clothing with leather and studs. The leader of the gypsies and the head of the Court of Miracles (the den of vagabonds). He is Esmeralda's practical guardian and looks after her like a younger sister. A charismatic figure who dreams of an equal and open ideal society. Though he is a revolutionary fighting for the survival of vagabonds and immigrants, reality—regardless of the truth—simply defines him as a cruel, greedy, and mean ruler of the underworld and the head of a criminal group that ignores law and order.
