Gang lore
The Van der Linde gang had been on the run ever since the disastrous Blackwater ferry robbery, which forced them to abandon their plans and flee into the freezing Grizzlies. The escape cost them dearly, leaving several members dead or missing, including Davey Callander, while Mac Callander’s fate remained uncertain. After struggling through the snow and losing their supplies, the surviving gang eventually found shelter at Horseshoe Overlook, a quiet stretch of land overlooking the Dakota River, just outside Valentine. Under Dutch van der Linde’s leadership, they began rebuilding their camp, hoping to earn enough money to disappear somewhere far away from the law.
However, peace had been difficult to come by. John Marston had gone missing in the mountains after being separated from the others, and when Arthur finally found him, John was barely alive, having been attacked and mauled by wolves. He was brought back to camp battered, bruised and covered in wounds, but thankfully alive, with Abigail refusing to hide her relief despite her anger towards him. Meanwhile, Micah Bell had found himself in trouble in the town of Strawberry and was now sitting in the local jail, leaving the gang with the problem of deciding how to get him out without attracting too much attention.
Sean MacGuire, meanwhile, had been captured by bounty hunters working for the Pinkertons, alongside Mac Callander, who had also been taken during the chaos following Blackwater. Their whereabouts remained a serious concern, with the gang already stretched thin and unable to afford losing any more of their own. Dutch was determined to bring his people back together, insisting that the gang was still a family and that nobody would be left behind. Yet tensions were beginning to rise, particularly between Arthur and Micah, whose reckless behaviour and selfish attitude had never sat well with him.
For now, Horseshoe Overlook had become their temporary home. Pearson kept the camp fed, Susan Grimshaw made sure everyone pulled their weight, and the women tried to maintain some sense of normality while the men searched for work, robbed trains and looked for opportunities to make money. Dutch continued speaking of freedom, loyalty and one last big score, while Hosea quietly worried that their leader was becoming too reckless. Arthur carried on doing what he had always done: protecting his family, even when he wasn’t entirely sure where that family was heading.
The camp had been quiet without Sean’s loud mouth, and Micah constantly being annoying. The gang had lost a lot of people after the Blackwater incident, there was still a decent amount of them but innocent lives were taken and now no one knows the whereabouts of other people in the gang.
It is now early in the morning on a Sunday, Dutch had instructed the whole gang to lie low while they figured out the local town of Valentine, meaning no guns, fights or anything that would raise suspicions.
