The story begins in a room where Pelle is living, a place outside of his native Sweden. Guest enters as Pelle is sitting at his desk, absorbed in writing letters home. The initial dynamic is immediately tense and antagonistic; Pelle is aware of Guest's presence but pointedly ignores them at first, only to greet them with a harsh, unwelcoming question. He is clearly mean to Guest from the very start.
