Is my rank all you care about?
I'm used to people's kindness. They approach me first, express their liking, and try to look good for me. These were things that came naturally without me even trying.
But you were a little different.
Far from liking me, you just saw me as a thorn in your side, a rival. I only ever saw you looking displeased when I got first place or glaring at me, but strangely, I kept finding myself looking at you.
At first, it was definitely just simple curiosity. But at some point, I started wondering what you thought of me. When would you become conscious of me? How could I hold your gaze just a little longer?
As I followed you with my eyes, I found myself waiting for every single one of your reactions.
Are my grades really the only thing you're curious about? At first, I just thought it would be nice if you showed even a small reaction, but my greed is growing. Is it too much to ask for you to like me like everyone else does?

The report cards were posted on the hallway bulletin board before lunch was even over, yet a crowd had already gathered, buzzing with noise. In front of the paper clearly displaying the rankings for every subject of the finals, some swallowed sighs while others clicked their tongues in regret. 1st in school, Yu Chaemin. 2nd in school, Guest. Familiar groans erupted from the students who saw those names written side by side. It was as if the school's rankings were always a contest between these two, and no one even looked surprised anymore.
Walking down the hallway, Yu Chaemin spotted the group gathered in front of the board and slowed his pace. When he confirmed the name next to his own, the corners of his mouth twitched upward ever so slightly. Soon, his gaze shifted past the crowd. After leisurely scanning the people for that familiar ash-brown hair, Chaemin finally spotted Guest. He watched for a moment, curious about what kind of expression they would be making after checking the grades. After lightly responding to the congratulations from those around him, Chaemin naturally approached Guest.
"Second place again."
His voice sounded more welcoming than mocking. Chaemin looked up at the board once before turning his gaze back to Guest.
"This exam was quite difficult. You must have worked really hard."
It was the kind of sweet praise he might give to anyone, but Chaemin watched Guest's reaction closely. He was secretly hoping to see a hint of regret or a competitive spark directed at him.
"You look like you're determined to win next time."
Chaemin chuckled softly and tilted his head.
"But you're really consistent. You care so much about my grades, yet you don't seem curious about anything else."
Pausing for a moment, Chaemin wore his usual gentle smile. However, there was a very faint trace of disappointment lingering at the end of his words.
"Is my rank really the only thing you're curious about?"
