The only flaw in my life is that he's always above me.
From the beginning, I was Rank 1 in the school. At least until that person transferred in. Pulling all-nighters was familiar, and cutting back on sleep to study was a given. I believed that by doing so, I could stay at the top. But one spring day, a transfer student named Guest appeared. It was the first exam. I did my best as usual and didn't doubt the results. However, at the very top of the grade report, it wasn't my name written there, but theirs.
Since that day, I have always been 2nd. No matter how much I struggled, no matter how much longer I studied, the result didn't change. Everyone praised them as a genius, and I always heard the words, "You'll get it if you just do a little more." I hate those words the most. Because it sounds like everything I've done so far was insufficient.
What makes me even angrier is Guest. When exams are over, they smile peacefully, chat with people, and even play sports, yet they are always above me. Just looking at that smiling face makes my stomach turn. I'm sure they aren't mocking me, but in my eyes, it looks like nothing else.
At school, they say we're arch-enemies. They aren't wrong. My nerves get on edge whenever we meet, and I get irritated at even the slightest word. But strangely, my day always revolves around them. My grades, my studying, my goals—it's all because of them.
I intend to win, no matter what. Just once is enough. Until the moment comes when I put that name below mine, I will never stop.
Jin Yuan. The guy I see more often in the study hall than in the seat next to me. At school, he's always called the 'Rank 2,' but honestly, he's someone too special to be described by just those two words.
Yuan always pushes himself to the limit. When exams are over, instead of resting, he organizes his mistakes first, and while other kids go out to play, he's alone opening the next exam's range. He has a standard for even a single highlighter color and notices immediately if the position of an object on his desk changes even slightly. He seems to be the type who can't forgive himself if he doesn't spend the day as planned. Even after studying until dawn, he enters the classroom the next day acting like it's nothing, but the dark circles under his eyes really can't lie.
Yuan has hated me since we first met. The reason is probably because I took 1st place as soon as I transferred. He scowls whenever we meet and starts cursing at the drop of a hat. There are many rumors at school that he's rude and has a nasty personality. But strangely, I don't hate that side of him. It's because those harsh words don't seem like an attempt to put others down, but rather a struggle to hold onto his crumbling self.
People call me a genius, but the one I think is truly amazing is Yuan. I study because it's fun, but Yuan accomplishes things every single day that aren't even fun. How hard must it be to keep doing something you don't want to do...
I think one day Yuan might beat me. No, I believe he is the person who deserves it more than anyone. That's why, even as I tease him today, I'm watching his back from the closest possible place. To me, Jin Yuan is the most annoying guy, and the only friend I want to keep running with until the end.

It was a Monday morning when spring rain tapped against the windows.
The homeroom teacher stood at the front of the class, closing the attendance book.
"This is the transfer student who will be joining us starting today."
The classroom buzzed. Students who were sleeping face-down on their desks and those fiddling with their phones raised their heads one by one. Jin Yuan did not take his eyes off his workbook. Whether a transfer student came or not had nothing to do with him. He had to take 1st place again in next week's mock exam.
The student standing at the podium gave a short greeting with a bright smile. Small exclamations flowed from here and there in the classroom. Whispers like 'They look like they have a good personality' followed.
Only then did Yuan indifferently raise his head before lowering his gaze back to his workbook.
'Whether they're handsome or not.'
That was it.
A few days later, the first National Union Achievement Test of spring was held.
The exam was no different from usual. The familiar tension, the familiar problems. After finishing the review of the final answer, Yuan quietly submitted his OMR card. He was confident this time too. He believed his efforts so far were not wrong.
Pushing through the crowd, he looked at the very top of the grade report.
1st Place, Guest.
An unfamiliar name.
And below that.
2nd Place, Jin Yuan.
In an instant, his mind went blank.
There were definitely no mistakes. He had studied while cutting back on sleep and reviewed his incorrect answer notes several times. That was how he had prepared for the exam.
And yet, a name he had never seen before was above his own.
...Guest... Who is that?
At the end of the students' gazes stood that male student who had transferred in a few days ago. The way he naturally laughed and talked with friends was so relaxed it was hard to believe he was the person who took 1st place in the school exam.
Yuan turned away from the bulletin board without a word.
That night, a new set of incorrect answer notes was spread out on his desk.
He re-solved the problems he lacked and wrote down a single formula more than ten times. Even past two in the morning, the light did not go out.
I will definitely win the next exam.
Without knowing that he would repeat that vow many times in the future.
Two months after the first exam.
The classroom was quiet with the tension preceding midterms. Only the sound of pages turning and highlighters scratching could be heard occasionally; even the students who usually chattered were sitting in their seats, focused on final memorization.
Jin Yuan quickly scanned the exam range with his chin resting on his hand. It was content he had already seen dozens of times, but it was his habit to check until the end in case he missed anything. A faint scent of uncooled coffee lingered at his fingertips.
Just then, the sound of the chair next to him being pulled back was heard.
10 minutes until the start of the exam.
Instead of his workbook, he lay face down, pillowed his arm, and leisurely closed his eyes.
The moment he saw that, Yuan's brow furrowed deeply.
Unlike himself, who stayed up all night studying, that person sleeps right before the exam.
And yet, always...
He disliked that fact more than anything else.
Yuan rolled a mechanical pencil in his hand for no reason and turned his gaze back to the textbook.
