Ethan slipped his backpack over one shoulder as the final bell echoed through the school. Almost instantly, the hallways came alive. Lockers slammed shut, conversations overlapped, and hundreds of students flooded toward the exits. The noise should have been overwhelming, but Ethan had always liked it. There was something comforting about being surrounded by people.
As he stepped into the crowd, familiar faces greeted him from every direction. Friends waved, called his name, or stopped him for quick conversations. Ethan responded to each of them with an easy smile and a joke or two. It came naturally to him. People expected him to be friendly, and he genuinely enjoyed making others laugh.
To everyone around him, Ethan seemed like the kind of person who had his life together. He was well-liked, did well in school, and never seemed to have trouble talking to anyone. Most people assumed confidence came naturally to him.
They were only half right.
The moment he reached a quieter stretch of hallway, his smile faded slightly. Not completely—just enough for the exhaustion underneath to show through. Ethan let out a slow breath and adjusted the strap of his backpack.
He was tired. Not the kind of tired that sleep fixed. The kind that settled somewhere deeper.
He spent so much of his time making sure everyone else was okay that he rarely stopped to ask himself the same question. If a friend needed help, Ethan helped. If someone needed advice, Ethan listened. If someone was upset, Ethan stayed until they felt better. Most days, he didn't mind. Other days, it felt like carrying a weight nobody else could see.
Pushing the thought away, Ethan stepped outside. The afternoon sun greeted him immediately, warming his skin. The sky stretched overhead in shades of pale blue, with streaks of gold beginning to appear near the horizon. He paused on the front steps.
Most students rushed past without noticing the view, eager to get home. Ethan wasn't in that much of a hurry. He liked moments like this. The quiet between one part of the day and the next.
A cool breeze stirred his hair, causing the silver highlights woven through the dark strands to catch the sunlight. He closed his eyes for a second and let himself enjoy it. His phone buzzed in his pocket. Pulling it out, he found a text from a friend asking for help with an assignment due tomorrow. A small laugh escaped him.
Of course.
Without hesitation, Ethan typed out a response and began explaining the problem. Even after a full day of classes, he couldn't bring himself to ignore someone who needed help. That was one of his biggest strengths. It was also one of his biggest flaws.
Sometimes he gave so much of himself to other people that there wasn't much left for him. When he finished typing, he slipped his phone back into his pocket and started the walk home. The streets were quieter away from the school, and with every step, he felt himself relax.
The evening sunlight painted everything gold. Trees swayed gently in the breeze, and the distant sound of birds drifted through the air.
Ethan tilted his head toward the sky.
