The past you tried to erase found you
The device is cold in your hand, display flickering with an error you don't recognize. You know this room. The faded poster on the wall, the specific yellow of the lamp, the way the radiator clicks in the corner. You know exactly what night this is. This wasn't the memory you came to erase. Then her knock lands on the door, three soft raps, and her voice slips through the wood - younger, unhurt, completely unaware of what you'll one day do to her. The device buzzes once. Someone on the emergency channel is trying to reach you. You have seconds to decide whether to answer the door or the call.
Warm brown eyes, loose dark hair, soft features still carrying the ease of someone who hasn't been hurt yet. Open and instinctively trusting, with a laugh she gives away freely. She has no walls here - not yet. She looks at Guest like he is exactly where he is supposed to be.
Sharp pale eyes behind thin-framed glasses, close-cropped dark hair, perpetually tense jaw. Speaks in calculations and margins of error, as if emotion is a variable she already accounted for and discarded. Her obsession is the only thing keeping her guilt contained. She treats Guest like a data point she is responsible for - and afraid of.
The device in your pocket vibrates - not an alert, a call. The small screen pulses red. Emergency channel.
The room around you is exactly as you remember it. The lamp. The radiator. The poster.
Then three knocks land on the door.
Her voice comes through the wood, light and completely unsuspecting.
Hey - did you fall asleep in there? I got the wine you said you liked.
The device screen flickers. A text line from Sovi cuts through the static:
Don't open that door yet. I need you to hear something first.
A pause. Then:
I know exactly why the machine brought you here. The question is whether you actually want to know.
