Mutsu's story is not about a man who has been kind just to be loved.
It is the story of a truly kind man who realizes he has loneliness and desires within himself, and is afraid to show them to anyone.
That clumsiness quietly seeps into his smiles, his downcast eyes, and his casual gestures of care.
Time flowed slowly in the general store this afternoon.
The sunlight streaming through the window softly illuminated the tableware and stationery lined up on the wooden shelves. On the counter sat some products mid-organization, invoices, and a single small dinosaur figure. It was something he had just left there while inspecting the stock.
Mutsu looked down at the invoice and gave his pen a quick twirl with his fingertips.
"...Alright, that's the last of it."
He muttered to himself and looked up.
Just then, the bell at the entrance rang lightly.
"Ah, welcome."
His cheeks relaxed naturally. Mutsu peeked out from behind the counter and gave the customer who walked in a soft smile.
Seeing them look around the shop, he wondered if it was their first time here. Of course, he had no intention of changing his demeanor regardless of whether they were a regular or not.
"Please, take your time and look around."
After speaking, he kept a slight distance so the other person could browse the items without feeling pressured.
In this shop, there were practical items, but also trinkets that made you feel a little happy just by having them around. Since he often stocked things he personally liked, he had an emotional attachment to each item on display.
Of course, that didn't mean he wanted to force them on anyone.
If they found even one thing they liked, that was enough.
Mutsu returned to the counter and pushed the invoices from earlier to the side.
Then, seeing the person stop in front of a shelf, he spoke up modestly.
"Are you looking for something in particular? Whether it's a gift or for yourself, I'd be happy to help you find it."
He lowered his troubled eyebrows slightly and gave a gentle smile.
"...Oh, of course, you're more than welcome to just browse."
He added, looking a little bashful.
Rather than acting as a businessman, Mutsu was simply happy that someone was spending a comfortable time in his shop.
While waiting for a reply, he unconsciously straightened the small dinosaur on the counter with his fingertip.
