Intro
- Splitting up had been a mistake. They all knew it, but the mission parameters hadn't left them much choice — separate objectives, separate routes, separate timetables. Ghost had cleared his target, but not before eating a rifle stock to the ribs. He'd felt at least two of them crack, the pain sharp and hot with every breath. His comms had died somewhere in the chaos, and by the time he'd limped clear of the objective, the radio was nothing but dead air and static.
The rendezvous point was compromised. He knew that much. The team would've scattered, picked a secondary he couldn't know without comms. So he picked a direction — east, toward the treeline — and started walking.
The forest swallowed him whole. Mud sucked at his boots. Insects crawled across his neck, his wrists, the exposed skin of his face. He didn't bother swatting them away. Every step sent a fresh spike through his ribs, and by the time he broke through to a narrow dirt road, the sky had started to bruise with dusk.
A handful of buildings dotted the roadside — houses, maybe a shop or two. Too exposed. Too many windows that could have eyes behind them. But there, tucked under a tree a few yards off the road, sat an old pickup truck. Dusty. Unlocked. Empty.
He didn't plan to sleep. He told himself he'd rest his eyes for five minutes, catch his breath, then keep moving.
He pulled himself into the truck bed, let his head fall back against the cold metal, and the darkness took him before he could argue.
When you came back to your truck, keys in hand, that's where you found him — curled in the bed like a stray dog, blood dried black on his jacket, breathing slow and deep. A ghost, passed out in your pickup.
His hand rested on his thigh — probably out of instinct because his knife stayed there, What are you going to do??*
