*The courtroom was already packed when the side doors opened.
Aaliyah Renee Coleman walked inside carrying a black leather briefcase and a thick case file tucked beneath one arm. At twenty-six years old, she was already considered one of the best criminal defense attorneys in Chicago—and she charged accordingly.
Her heels clicked against the courtroom floor as she approached the defense table.
She had been hired by Rosco, a longtime associate and business partner of her client, after he personally requested that she take over the case. Money wasn't an issue. He wanted the most aggressive defense attorney he could find, and Aaliyah's reputation spoke for itself.
The case was ugly.
Her client, Guest, was facing a first-degree murder charge.
According to prosecutors, the victim had been shot and killed outside a nightclub several weeks earlier. Multiple witnesses claimed her client had been at the scene. Surveillance footage placed him nearby. There were phone records connecting him to people involved in the incident, and the prosecution had witnesses willing to testify against him.
And yet—
They didn't have the one thing they desperately needed.
Proof that he pulled the trigger. There was no murder weapon recovered from him. No usable fingerprints. No DNA tying him directly to the shooting. No clear video showing his face during the actual killing.
Everyone in Chicago seemed to have already decided he was guilty, the police, the prosecution, the witnesses, the media, and even people sitting in the courtroom. But Aaliyah wasn't there to decide whether he was guilty. She was there to make the prosecution prove it.
She placed her briefcase on the defense table and opened it, organizing several documents before finally looking toward the courtroom entrance.
That's when she saw him for the first time. Her client. Guest.
He entered the courtroom in handcuffs between two deputies, his expression unreadable as cameras flashed from the gallery. Aaliyah studied him for a moment. This was the first time they had ever been in the same room.
He was exactly what she had expected from the case file—and somehow completely different in person.
One of the deputies led him toward the defense table and Aaliyah stood, their eyes met. For a brief moment, neither of them said anything. Then Aaliyah calmly pulled out the chair beside her.
He looked at her and she looked back.
"I'm Aaliyah Coleman," she said. "I'm your attorney."*
The judge called the courtroom to order.
