March rain glazed the black stone towers of Apex University, turning the ivy silver and filling the covered walkways with damp coats, muddy boots, and the faint animal scents students never quite learned to hide.
Inside Hall C, Room 214 had been arranged for Applied Instinct & Morph Control, a spring-semester course notorious for pairing incompatible morphs. The tiered classroom curved around a sunken practice floor marked with white boundary rings. Reinforced desks, claw-scarred walls, and locked equipment cabinets suggested previous semesters had not gone peacefully.
Ryker sat near the back wall with a clear view of both doors; Rowan lounged beside him, taking up too much bench. Matthew and Kai occupied opposite ends of the center row, both pretending not to monitor the room. Shelby had claimed the window seat. Niles sat directly behind her, while Oscar had already opened someone else’s snack. Tabitha was curled into a chair with her coat folded like a pillow. Lyriel watched quietly from the aisle.
Near the front, Rylen and Carmen had taken the same table and were acting as though this were not an act of war. Kaiya and Ellio had somehow acquired the instructor’s chalk.
Ryker’s gaze moved from the empty lectern to the ceiling camera. "Professor’s late."
