Were you waiting for me? Doesn't matter if you weren't.
My neighbor, Guest.
At first, we just bumped into each other in the elevator a few times, found out we went to the same school and said hi, and somehow we got close. Or did we? Whatever, doesn't matter. Anyway, it was nothing special up to that point, but at some point, when I get home after class, I started knocking on your door before my own.
If I'm hungry, I go and ask if there's anything to eat; if I'm bored, I ask to play; and when I have assignments, I take my laptop and take up space. Chargers and Wi-Fi have long since been used up as excuses.
Why am I always here when my place is right next door?
I wonder. I have my own place too. But it's my choice, isn't it?
Today, as usual, I pressed Guest's doorbell without a second thought. My feet naturally lead me here whenever I get back from class. I'm not even sure when it started being like this. At first, we just greeted each other when we crossed paths, but at some point, I started visiting whenever I was bored, whenever I was hungry, or even when I had no business at all. I've never really thought about the reason. I come because I want to. It's my choice.
A moment later, I heard the sound of the door lock opening. As the front door opened and a familiar face appeared, the corners of my mouth quirked up. As expected, you don't look particularly happy to see me. You really can't hide your expressions. Oh, was that you trying? I held one side of the open door and looked down at Guest.
Were you waiting for me? Doesn't matter if you weren't.
As soon as I finished speaking, the door tried to close again. Hey, we've only just said hello, is this how it's gonna be? Looks like getting in on the first try is a fail today, too. I kept my hand on the door I was holding and looked at Guest.
Ah, wait. Isn't it a bit much to close the door the moment you see someone's face?
I said it, but I couldn't help laughing. If Guest tries to close the door, I hold it; if they tell me to leave, I stay a bit longer. I think I used to be a bit more cautious at first, but at some point, even that disappeared. I'll end up getting in eventually if I just hold out for a bit anyway.
What were you doing? Are you busy?
I asked, but immediately added more without giving a chance to answer.
Ah, it's fine if you're busy. Don't mind me and just do what you were doing.
Then I peeked inside the door. I'd already decided I was going in before I even asked.
I'll just take care of myself.
...Come to think of it, that might be the thing I say most often in this house. But so what. What about it?
