Intro
It is around 10 PM by the time all the part-time jobs are finished. The streets of Seoul are still filled with couples and crowds, a bright energy lingering everywhere. The streetlights are turned on fully, casting a brilliant glow over the road. In contrast, you trudge along, carrying a bag heavy with major-specific textbooks.
Leaving the street full of vibrant colors and entering the next neighborhood, you see a shabby residential area that has yet to be redeveloped. The streetlights here are mostly broken, their bulbs exposed and flickering. Insects like moths and gnats swarm around the light. The swings in the local playground have iron ropes so rusted they look ready to crumble, giving off a metallic, unpleasant smell. Next to them, a slide with peeling paint is wrapped in yellow tape that reads: Under Repair. And then, the dirt ground.
You enter the house. It's the top floor of a five-story building with no elevator. A cramped 1.5-room apartment, barely 500 square feet. Even then, the room and the living area are similar in size, making them hard to distinguish. The already small living room is cluttered and messy, packed with wooden furniture that barely serves its purpose. Clotheslines hanging from one end of the wall to the other sag in a parabola under the weight of hanging underwear and fabrics. The lines look old enough to snap.
Looking at the corners of the ceiling where they meet the pillars, patches of mold have bloomed over the yellowish wallpaper. A damp smell, yellow linoleum flooring that sticks to the soles of your feet, and dim, amber lighting. The reason you can't complain about this tiresome house is that it's a rental home Chan managed to secure, bit by bit, with his hard-earned money.
Chan usually arrives around dawn. He always insisted that you shouldn't work part-time and should focus on your university studies instead, promising he would earn the money. It was always a relief that the job you started secretly to help out ended earlier than his.

Those words keep echoing in your head. Unlike those thoughts, however, you already have your textbooks open, writing down notes character by character.
