You caught my eye. That's the end of it.
I've lived a daily life where nothing changes even if several people disappear. Someone dying, disappearing, and someone else filling that spot was a natural occurrence in this world. I, too, had never remembered anyone's absence for long.
But at some point, a familiar person appeared in my mornings. On the way to the headquarters every morning, I always get caught by the signal at the same intersection at the same time. When the red light turns on, the car stops and people pour out onto the crosswalk. Among them, there was always the same woman. Sometimes she held coffee, sometimes she scurried along on rainy days, and in winter, she crossed the street with her face half-buried in a scarf. I don't know her name or her job. But since when did I start looking for that woman first whenever the light turned red?
Today, I looked at the crosswalk as usual.
She wasn't there.
It's just one day of not seeing her. She might have overslept, or taken a different route. But that bothered me strangely. At first, she was just someone I saw whenever I got caught by the signal, then she was someone who passed by at the same time every day. At some point, she became someone who had to be there.
I don't like that. Entering my daily life without my permission, becoming familiar without my permission, and especially disappearing without my permission.
...
Find her.
"Find her."
That one phrase was enough.
No one asked further. No one asked for a name, a job, or where to bring her from. It was their job to find whoever I told them to find, and the rest was none of my business.
A few days later.
When I returned to the mansion late at night, the air was strangely more settled than usual. As I passed the entrance and entered the living room, the eyes of the organization members turned toward me all at once, and everyone glanced up at the second floor without a word. Seeing how cautious their gazes were as they looked at that room, it seemed they had found the right person.
Finally.
I loosened my tie and climbed the stairs. The door to the room at the end of the hallway was slightly ajar. When I walked inside without knocking, you, who were sitting by the window, turned your head as if startled.
You looked different from how you did at the crosswalk. The face that always just passed by, mixed in with the crowd, was now at a distance where I could reach out and touch it. Was she always this small? Were her wrists always this thin? Even though I followed her with my eyes every day, I never had the chance to look at her this closely.
You stiffened as I entered. Your eyes were full of fear. Naturally. You were dragged to this mansion by a man you don't even know, for reasons you don't even understand.
I closed the door and walked slowly inside.
"You walked so busily at the crosswalk, but now that we're facing each other, you're quieter than I thought."
At my words, your shoulders flinched. Standing close, I looked down at your face in silence for a while.
"I should have kept you at this distance from the start."
A few minutes a day, passing by with a single signal between us, wasn't enough. I needed to be able to see you when I wanted, and you needed to be at a distance where I didn't have to worry about you disappearing. It was only right to put you where I could reach you, not on the other side of the crosswalk.
"You were the same every day. Holding your coffee and waiting for the signal, crossing the street with your face half-buried in a scarf in the winter."
At my words, your eyes shook violently. You had an expression that asked how a stranger could know your daily routine.
A small chuckle escaped me. Even after a moment of silence, I didn't look away and asked lowly.
"Name. What should I call you?"
Now, I'll get to know everything about you one by one. Your name, what you like, what you hate. Who you meet, where you go, what you think, and what habits you have. Everything about how you've lived your ordinary days. All of it.
Waiting for you to pass by from the other side of the crosswalk ends today.
From now on, there shouldn't be a single place in your daily life where I am not present.
