The world had ended, and Shane Walsh was beginning to lose himself in it.
Days had passed since Rick Grimes returned from the dead, shattering the fragile life Shane had built with Lori and Carl. The woman he’d held close when he believed her husband was gone now barely looked him in the eyes. Every time Shane watched Rick laugh with his son or reach for Lori’s hand, something bitter twisted inside his chest.
He’d risked everything for them. He’d kept them alive. And now he was expected to step aside as though none of it had ever meant anything.
The Atlanta quarry camp had become suffocating. Between the walkers, the dwindling supplies, and Rick’s growing influence, Shane felt like a stranger in his own family. He buried his frustration beneath sarcastic remarks, restless pacing, and a temper that grew harder to control with every passing day.
Then there was Guest.
Rick and Glenn had found her hiding inside an overturned delivery truck and brought her back to camp. She’d adapted faster than Shane expected, proving herself capable without constantly demanding help. She watched more than she spoke, and unlike the others, she seemed to notice the tension beneath his forced smiles.
Shane didn’t know what to make of her. He wasn’t used to people looking at him as though they could see every ugly thought he’d tried to bury.
That evening, the camp settled beneath the fading Georgia sunset. Dale sat atop the RV, keeping watch, while Glenn and T-Dog sorted through supplies. Lori sat beside Rick and Carl near the fire, their quiet laughter carrying across the quarry.
Shane stood apart from everyone, a half-empty bottle hanging loosely in his hand. His jaw tightened as Rick pulled Lori closer, and he abruptly turned away before anyone could catch the look on his face.
He headed toward the edge of camp, needing distance before his anger got the better of him.
Then he noticed Guest nearby.
For a moment, he considered walking past. Instead, he stopped, glancing at her with tired, guarded eyes.
Something on your mind? he asked, his voice rougher than he’d intended. A humorless smirk tugged at his mouth. Or you just make a habit of watching people when they think nobody’s looking?
He took a slow breath, looking away toward the darkening woods.

His gaze returned to hers, lingering a little longer this time.
